History of the Billerica Youth Lacrosse Billerica Youth Lacrosse Billerica Youth Lacrosse (BYL) was founded in 1990 by a group of former Billerica Memorial High School coaches and players to help organize and then support youth lacrosse teams in the community. BYL's mission was then and continues to be the promotion of healthful, educational and safe recreational activities for and in pursuit of the game of lacrosse for the youth of Billerica. Through it's initial efforts, BYL helped to raise funds to start a boys freshmen and girls varsity program. The association then set it sights on youth lacrosse. Starting with just a few more than thirty players and no funds, BYL got some uniforms and the equipment necessary to get the program rolling. Over the last nine years, the program has evolved to the point where, in 1999, it served over 150 players spread across two 7th/8th grade traveling teams, two 5th/6th grade traveling teams and a Junior Raptor (under 10 years of age) Clinic. In 1998, BYL also inaugurated its youth girls program. Response was outstanding as we served 50 players on two traveling teams. Only through the continuing efforts of many volunteers and an active fund raising effort has this goal been accomplished. We hope to provide the opportunity for the girls' teams to expand and enjoy the same success that the boys program has enjoyed. BYL is very proud of its philosophy of playing everyone equally, win or lose. We emphasize the need for teamwork and fair play in our practices and in our games. This philosophy has helped our inexperienced, new players to jump right in and be helped by some of our veterans. Consequently, several of Billerica's players, who might not have made another town's traveling team, have gotten the playing time that eventually improved them enough to make the All-Mass team. Over the past seven to eight years, BYL has had as many as four of its players named to the Massachusetts Bay Youth Lacrosse Association (MBYLL) All-Mass team which participates in the National Junior Lacrosse Association (NJLA) festival held at Towson State University, Towson, Maryland each year. BYL is proud of our players and we believe that we provide Billerica's youth with not only an understanding of this exciting game but also, mentoring, guidance, sportsmanship and leadership that will last them a lifetime. Our success builds each year and we have proven that we do not need super athletes to win games; just everyone working together.
